Getting married or divorced will affect the status of your will. To give yourself certainty you may want to take stock of your wishes and consider writing a new will.

If you get married orĀ enter a civil union your will is automatically revoked. The only exceptions are where your will states otherwise, or where it says that it was made with regard to the coming union.

If you get divorced, or leave a civil unionĀ most benefits given to your former partner in the will are cancelled unless it is made clear after the divorce, and in the will, that you wish them to have the benefits.

If you have specific wishes about where your property should go you should consider making a new will.

Family lawyers can provide you with advice on what your obligations and responsibilities are to your former partner when getting divorced.
